Russell Mayes

The Voice of the Falcons

Russell Mayes begins his first year as Fulton’s play-by-play announcer on WKCS 91.1 FM. Mayes, a 1995 Fulton graduate, returns to Fulton after a 6 year stint as the voice of the Loudon Redskins on WLIL Radio.

Mayes’s broadcasting career began in 1993 as a student in the Radio Broadcasting class at Fulton High School. In 1995, he began his professional career at WLIL in Lenoir City handling a variety of roles. In addition to his work on WLIL, Mayes has also broadcast Blount Co. football and basketball games, and served as a panelist on the Thursday Night Football Forecast and Bob Gilbert’s The Sports Page on WKZX in Maryville. Mayes has broadcast 3 state championship football games, 3 state basketball tournaments, and several important high school baseball tournament games. This August, Mayes became the Radio Broadcasting instructor at Fulton High.

In 2001, Mayes helped to create The Falcon Network as a way to broadcast important Fulton playoff games to a vast audience throughout East Tennessee. WKCS, WLIL, WKZX, and WATO in Oak Ridge have carried Falcon Network broadcasts. Two of the most important games in Fulton Football history, the 2002 semi-final at Trousdale Co. and the 2003 quarterfinal at Austin-East were heard live only on the Falcon Network.

Mayes serves as the public address announcer for the Knoxville Orthopedic Classic football jamboree at Neyland Stadium, and the High School Tip-off Classic at Thompson-Boling Arena. In addition, he also serves as the public address announcer for JV and freshmen football games played at Fulton. This winter, Mayes will begin his 12th season as the play-by-play voice of Fulton Basketball on WKCS.

Mayes is a 2003 graduate of the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. In addition to Radio Broadcasting, he is certified to teach World and US History and United States Government.
