Fulton High School
football fans can catch live broadcast coverage of the Falcons on the
flagship station of the Falcon Network, WKCS-FM 91.1. WKCS has broadcast
Fulton football games across Knoxville since 1953. In 2007, fans can
also listen to live Fulton football broadcasts from
anywhere through a link on the fultonfootball.com website. Russell
Mayes, Chuck Wilson, and Bradley Cooper team together to bring fans
every exciting play. Coverage begins every Friday at 7:15 with the
Countdown to Kickoff show, and concludes with the Falcon Wrap-up
Show featuring the complete final stats and an interview with Fulton
head coach Buck Coatney.
Russell Mayes is in
his 4th year as Fulton’s play-by-play announcer on WKCS 91.1 FM. Mayes,
a 1995 Fulton graduate, returned to Fulton in 2004 after a 6-year stint
as the voice of the Loudon Redskins on WLIL Radio.
Mayes’s
broadcasting career began in 1993 as a student in the Radio Broadcasting
class at Fulton High School. In 1995, he began his professional career
at WLIL in Lenoir City handling a variety of roles. In addition to his
work on WLIL, Mayes has also broadcast Blount Co. football and
basketball games, and served as a panelist on the Thursday Night
Football Forecast, and Bob Gilbert’s The Sports Page on WKZX
in Maryville, The Ticket Sports Page Live on 1040 AM, and The
Golf News and Sports Show on ESPN 1180. His insights on high school
sports have also been heard on Tony Basilio’s radio show and telecasts
on WMAK. Mayes has broadcast 5 state championship football games, 4
state basketball tournaments, and a state high school baseball
tournament. He also serves as the Radio Broadcasting instructor at
Fulton High, and WKCS station manager.
In 2001, Mayes
helped to create The Falcon Network as a way to broadcast important
Fulton playoff games to a vast audience throughout East Tennessee. WKCS,
WLIL, WKZX, and WATO in Oak Ridge have carried Falcon Network
broadcasts. Three of the most important games in Fulton Football
history, the 2002 semi-final at Trousdale Co. and the 2003 quarterfinal
at Austin-East, and the 2004 BlueCross Bowl game were heard live only on
the Falcon Network.
Mayes serves as the public
address announcer for the Knoxville Orthopedic Classic football jamboree
at Neyland Stadium, and the High School Tip-off Classic at
Thompson-Boling Arena. In addition, he also serves as the public address
announcer for JV and freshmen football games played at Fulton. This
winter, Mayes will begin his 15th season as the play-by-play
voice of Fulton Basketball on WKCS. He worked with the Tennessee
Athletic Coaches Association in media relations for the 2007
Tennessee-Kentucky All-Star game, and is assisting in the planning for
the 1st Toyota Tennessee East-West All-Star Football Game
Mayes is a 2003 graduate
of the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Arts in Political
Science. In addition to Radio Broadcasting, he is certified to teach
World and US History and United States Government.
Former Fulton quarterback,
and UT walk-on Chuck Wilson serves as a color analyst on the Falcon
Network broadcasts. Wilson led the Falcons to a share of the 1999 Region
2-3A championship. He completed 84 of 173 passes for 1317 yards and 11
TDs in 1999. Wilson was a member of the Fulton coaching staff during the
2004 and 2005 seasons, and currently coaches with the Knoxville Falcons
Super Midgets team. He also is the color announcer on Fulton basketball
broadcasts.
Bradley Cooper is in his
second season as a member of the Fulton broadcasting team. Cooper was a
2-year starter for the Falcons at center, helping lead Fulton to the
2004 state championship on the offensive line. He earned All-Region 2-3A
honors in 2005.
Fulton Senior Josh Nevius
serves as the host for the Countdown to Kickoff show. Josh
Rogers, Matthew Brummitt, James McKechnie, and Donovan Debny serve as
studio engineers. Game stats are handled by Scott Warwick and Jason
Harbison.
